POLICE are using a new weapon in their bid to clamp down on underage drinking in the Bexley borough.
Alcohol testing kits are being used by neighbourhood policing teams in Brampton, Christchurch, Barnehurst and St Mary’s as part of a six-month pilot scheme, which was launched in October last year by Bexley Council.
The kit consists of a small sterile strip that can be dipped in a drink and will give an immediate indication of whether or not it contains alcohol.
Results are colour coded according to alcohol strength.
The police can then confiscate the alcohol from youths or people drinking in an alcohol exclusion zone.
Bexley cabinet member for community affairs Councillor Katie Perrior said: “We know that some young people like to meet with friends in public places such as parks and open spaces, and that a minority of them do so to drink alcohol.
