A DRAMATIC police raid on a family home has signalled the start of a widespread police offensive against dangerous dogs.
Officers from the Bromley Borough Support Unit were joined by specialists from the Metropolitan Police Status Dogs Unit for the early morning raid on a house in Gardiner Close, St Mary Cray, last Thursday.
The team suspected that the end-of-terrace house was being used to breed and train illegal dogs.
Two adult dogs and a three-month old puppy were found at the address, but after a closer inspection by the dog handlers the adult male dog was found to be a legitimate Johnson-type American Bulldog, and the female a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, both of which are classed as legal breeds.
The puppy was deemed too young to be properly classified.
Officers did find a training arm at the property of the type which can be used to train dogs to fight.
Although the dogs were found to be within the law, a 17-year-old man at the address was arrested for possession of cannabis.
He was taken to Bromley Police Station where he was charged and bailed to appear at Bromley Youth Court on April 6. The dawn raid marked the start of Operation Contra, an offensive set up by Bromley Police to combat the concerning rise in dog crime.
On March 10 two pit bull terriers were seized by police after separate raids in Bromley and Penge.
The Status Dogs Unit is on course to have seized more than 1,000 dangerous dogs this year.
