GORDON Brown issued advice on swine flu during a visit to an NHS Direct call centre in Beckenham this morning.

The Prime Minister wanted to see for himself workers at the office in Beckenham Road who were taking calls from members of the public about swine flu.

A spokesman for Downing Street said: “They are taking a lot of calls. He wanted to make this visit to see how people were doing.

“While he was there they were taking calls about it.”

Mr Brown has urged people with swine flu symptoms to seek advice as he offered reassurance that Britain is well placed to deal with the outbreak.

During his visit he said the advice line was coping well with demand.

He said the Government was increasing the number of face masks available to the NHS and looking at different vaccines, while stressing that the Tamiflu anti-viral drug would deal with the bug.

He said there are still only eight confirmed cases of swine flu in Britain, although an NHS worker is expected to find out if he is the country's first case of human-to-human transfer.

Mr Brown said: "If people have the symptoms they should ask for advice as quickly as possible.

Prime Minister gives swine flu advice on visit to NHS help centre in Beckenham Empty Campaign launched as swine flu pandemic 'imminent' by the Department of Health

Post  Staff Sat May 02, 2009 4:38 pm

A PUBLIC awareness campaign to tackle the spread of swine flu has been launched by the Department of Health.

The Catch it, Bin It, Kill it! advert warns people to cover their noses and mouths with tissues when they cough and sneeze and then to throw the tissue away and wash their hands.

The advertisement, which will appear in print, television and radio aims to target everyone in the UK.

In the television advert a man travelling in a lift sneezes and the germs quickly spread to an old couple and a child.

The print advert presents a detailed image of a different man sneezing, trying to cover his mouth with his hand, but failing to stop germs getting through.

The message at the bottom of the picture says: "When you cough or sneeze, your germs go everywhere. Fast. And once they've hit a surface, they can survive for hours.

"Covering your mouth and nose with your hand won't stop them. But a tissue will.

"Catch the sneeze, then bin the tissue and wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible to kill the germs.

"The current swine flu alert increases the importance of this."

The campaign comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) raises its swine flu alert level to phase five - the second highest level.

Its alert upgrade came after three more people in Britain were confirmed as having the illness, including a 12-year-old girl, bringing the UK's confirmed total to five.

Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's Chief Medical Adviser, said: "Phase five indicates that WHO considers a global pandemic to be imminent, whereas at phase four a global pandemic is not inevitable.

“A change to phase five is a signal to countries' governments to ramp up their pandemic preparations - which we are already doing."

Prime Minister gives swine flu advice on visit to NHS help centre in Beckenham Empty Swine Flu In Bromley

Post  Maggie Mon May 18, 2009 11:45 pm

GIRL from Bromley has been diagnosed with swine flu.

According to NHS London, she was in contact with previously confirmed cases.

There have now been 57 confirmed cases in London, and 101 in the UK.

An NHS London spokesman said: “NHS London continues to advise residents in affected areas that unless they have flu-like symptoms, are being tested for swine flu or have been advised otherwise, there is no need to stop their normal everyday activities, such as going to work or school.

“In the meantime, we remind the public that the best protective measure is to use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw all used tissues away, and to regularly wash your hands.”

Bromley PCT's joint director of public health, Dr Angela Bhan, said: "Like all London PCTs we are watching the situation closely as around half of the current confirmed cases are in the capital.”
