THE chairman of a residents’ association says he is stumped as to how an accident blackspot near his village can be made safer.
On Saturday (April 11) a young couple from New Addington were killed when their car collided with a van in Shire Lane, Farnborough.
Police have confirmed the narrow road, which lies to the north of Downe village, has been the scene of 23 accidents in just over a year.
Chairman of Downe Residents’ Association Derek Powell said: “It is a tragedy that young lives have been lost.
“It’s a narrow road and takes a lot of experience to travel safely along the lane.
“I am not criticising anyone. This sounds like a tragic accident and my thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives.
“The council have done their best and made every effort to slow the traffic. I just don’t know what the solution is.”
After the fatal accident at the weekend, News Shopper readers said Shire Lane is dangerous and have voiced their concern that another tragedy may not be far away unless traffic is slowed on the 40mph road.
Luke Maskell, 20, and his 16-year-old girlfriend Amiee Phipps were killed when their Renault Megane spun across the road and collided with a van.
The driver of the van was taken to hospital with injuries to his ribs, chest and arm.
