The landlord of a property in Star Lane, Orpington pleaded guilty to defrauding Bromley Council of benefits intended to help a tenant who had moved out.

Sentenced on 18th March at Bromley Magistrates Court, 28 year old Tarlochan Dhaliwal, of Park Crescent, Erith, admitted defrauding Bromley Council of housing benefits totalling £13,926 for the period from May 2007 to September 2008. He had not notified the Authority that his tenant had moved out of the Star Lane property and continued to receive housing benefit payments for the period. He was ordered to pay £250 costs and the Council is also recovering the £13,926.

Councillor Michael Tickner, Chairman of Bromley’s Audit Committee, said: “This prosecution shows that landlords as well as claimants who commit fraud in Bromley will be prosecuted. We will take vigorous action to ensure that our residents’ public money is protected from benefit cheats.”

This case bring the total of persons prosecuted to 177 since Bromley and Greenwich Councils started working in partnership to track, trace and prosecute benefit fraudsters.
